Home >Mayor's Office > Inauguration Speech
Distinguished and beloved people of Dong-gu and all guests and officials who are here with us today,

Today is a very meaningful day for me. I would like to give my sincere gratitude to the people of Dong-gu for electing me as the mayor and for supporting me despite my shortcomings.

I am resolved to do my best to make Dong-gu a livable and energetic city and to help every person in Dong-gu achieve their dreams.

Dearest people of Dong-gu!
The mission of this 3rd elected administration is " Together Let's make a Bright and Energetic Dong-gu." I will focus on bringing together the hearts of the people and on achieving local development.
I will respect the decisions of those who supported other political parties at the election and closely examine other candidates' pledges to adopt what may help our administration.

Our benevolence and considerateness will bring us into one community and our collaboration will change the future of Dong-gu.

People of Dong-gu!
Our district possesses a heavenly natural landscape as well as abundant maritime attractions and marine resources.
Hyundai Heavy Industries, a world-class company, is located in Ulsan and is the backbone of Ulsan's infinite growth potential.

Dong-gu must become the center of Korea's maritime and shipbuilding industries and must be able to attract the attention of the world.

As our past confrontations and conflicts have been converted into coexistence and cooperation, we should repeat the dynamics of Mipo Bay and the enterprise of Bangeojin Port to undertake new local developments. It is time we prepare for a new leap ahead into a new future.

I believe that the vision and master plan of the mayor, coupled with your feedback, understanding, and participation, will bring about "A Livable Dong-gu and the Best Dong-gu."

I will concentrate on realizing my plans and my promises for you.

First, I will develop themed tourism products.
I will make Dong-gu the gateway to the maritime tourism belt of the Southeastern Korean Peninsula. I will change the master plans of Ilsan Recreation Park and Daewangam Park to develop specialized tourism products relating to ships and whales.

Further, I will establish a tourism belt including Bangeo Port, Seonggeut, Daewangam Park, and Ilsan Beach.

To these ends, therefore, we should consider relocating the Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education's Training Institute out of Daewangam Park.

I will also organize a specialized team to focus on the development of Ilsan Recreation Park, the improvement of Ilsanjin Village and Housing Environment, and the establishment of an Ilsan Fishery and Tourism Village. By doing so, I will make all the people of Dong-gu the masters of our local tourism resources.

I will reinforce Dong-gu's specialties and beauties and create a city that is a harmony of tradition and modernity.

Second, I will concentrate on revitalizing old marketplaces.
We must protect our old marketplaces; we should not allow the large discount superstores to bring an end to our old marketplaces. I will modernize our old marketplaces, issue gift certificates for local marketplaces, and manage a local marketplace development council to make our old marketplaces competitive and specialized.

Third, I will make Dong-gu a city of culture and welfare.
As Ulsan introduced 40-hour work week last year, it is now necessary for us to establish a diverse leisure culture.
I will establish a cultural center and specialized local festivals for the local people and make Dong-gu a city of culture, welfare, and tourism in which everyone can enjoy themselves and stay with comfort.

Fourth, I will do my best to expand road systems.
I will concentrate on completing the Mt. Yeompo tunnel and the Ulsangyo Bridge as soon as possible. Also, the Mt. Yeonpo tunnel shall be toll-free.
I will do my best to establish a new road system between Jujeon and Gangdong and to expand the five-land circle road by Bangeojin Port.

I will also enhance the life quality and the happiness of Dong-gu even before the Ulsangyo Bridge and Mt. Yeompo Tunnel are completed.
By this, I hope to prevent a population decline.
In particular, I will increase parking spaces for large-scale apartment complexes as well as improve waste treatment and the overall living environment.

Fifth, I will establish a desirable educational environment.
I will do my best to reduce our people's financial burden in supporting their children's study abroad programs and English tutors. Also, I will establish an English village with native speakers living in our local area.

I will provide more subsidies for school meal services and operate a shuttle bus to the Dongbu Library. Also, I will meet with education officials to listen to their opinions and reflect upon their ideas in order to establish a desirable educational environment.

Sixth, I will offer comfortable living for the elderly.
As we are living in an aging society with a low birth rate, I will establish more senior rehabilitation facilities and provide more financial resources to establish more short-term support centers so that a greater number of our senior citizens can live happy and healthy lives.

I will also work with local companies to create more jobs for the elderly.

Seventh, I will help socially isolated people live independent lives.
To help disabled people to live independently, I will establish and manage support centers for the disabled and increase convenient civil petition services to actively solve inconveniences faced by the disabled and to make Dong-gu a livable city for those with special needs.

I will work with local companies to create more jobs for low-income wage earners and other socially isolated people and help companies and local communities to grow together.

Eighth, I will create a new culture for women and youth.
I will provide more opportunities for women, who account for 50% of our population, to participate in social activities. I will also support their hobbies and leisure activities so that they will be able to live healthy in happy families.
I will provide specialized training for women to encourage their social participation and the pursuit of equal rights.

For the youth, the future of our world, I will help them explore their dreams and hopes and grow into healthy adults. I will establish cultural centers and general sports centers geared toward young people.
I will develop and supply key programs for the youth and concentrate my administrative capacity in creating a sound culture for them.

Dearest people of Dong-gu!
All these plans of mine cannot be achieved alone. I need your active support, especially from Chairman Cheon Gi-ok and other council members, in order to accomplish all of my plans.

My beloved people of the Dong-gu Office!
We are standing at a new start line.
Together, your participation and capabilities will decide whether Dong-gu will develop into a city of the future or lose its energy and decline.

I will do my best to motivate you and help change your working environment. I will establish a system for you to freely compete with one another, be fairly evaluated based on your performance and accomplishments, and receive satisfying rewards.

Respected people of Dong-gu!
This is a time of change and innovation. We must start our engine of growth as quickly as possible to keep up with changes and innovation.
We must discard conventional customs and create new values to lead the world together.

I will work as hard as I can on behalf of each one of you.
Please share your love and encouragement with me.

I wish you and your families the best of health and good luck.

Thank you very much for listening.
